hi theworkblog.ca. it has been a long time huh, not cuz i’ve had a lack of things to say but, well, life is busy in Londinium. Let’s see… where to begin.
So I’ve started a job with one of the largest B2B media companies in the world, in a new division. And I have to say, it is awesome. Having come from a small company run by a senile tyrant, it is wonderful to be surrounded by driven, successful people (as opposed to those forbidden to excel due to inertia.) My team is awesome, all superstars in their various areas.
But it hasn’t all been sunshines and lollipops.
What I’m about to do here is admit to an embarassing mistake. I messed up, and had no one to blame but myself. We had a huge exhibition this week at which I was marketing a niche workshop… and the flyers had a major typo on them (despite my decidedly inadequate proofing!)
Basically, I cocked it up. Big time. I went home that night and binged on cheese and A-Team on DVD (I do love a stinky blue with Mr. T)… and decided the way forward was to stand up and face the music.
So I wrote my MD an email the next morning (she wasn’t in) basically copping to it and accepting full responsibility. While she certainly wasn’t happy, she responded with a compliment – not only did she appreciate how I took responsibility, but she went on to say that she values me in the team and organisation.
See, that’s management. What took her 5 minutes to write and send not only salvaged my mood and week, but also (and more importantly) enfranchised me in the business and my role.
All in all, a bittersweet week, but one I won’t forget.
And by the way – London is awesome. Don’t expect me home any time soon.
